It's a Family Tradition!
Brothers Chris and Mark Mason opened the Toledo, Ohio area’s finest billiards store in 1988. They sold pool tables, bar stools, lighting fixtures, and decorative pieces for adorning man-caves and cigar bars alike.
As the economy began buckling after numerous hard hits, Chris and Mark watched in sadness as many Toledo area retailers began shutting their doors forever.
They’d had enough upon learning the Buckeye Wolverine Shop, a staple in the community for 30 years, was also closing up shop. Chris approached the owner with an idea to ensure the legacy of the unique store would carry on.
In August of 2010, the newest Buckeye Wolverine Shop was opened in 2,500 square feet of scarlet and gray; 2,500 square feet of maize and blue. The Maumee, Ohio store shares its space with Mason’s Billiards & Barstools which made perfect sense to the Mason brothers. They were already selling pool tables and accessories emblazoned with an “M” or a block “O”, so redesigning the store was a pretty seamless transition for customers.
Today the selection is now 12,000 square feet and the Masons will tell you stories of customers’ fanatic behavior. Take, for instance, the customer Chris was helping to fit Ohio State floor mats into his pick-up truck. Things were going along smoothly when out of the blue, the Buckeye freezes, looks Chris in the eye and in all seriousness says “You ARE a Buckeye, right?”
Chris realizing the customer was horrified at the possibility of working with a Michigan enemy doesn’t skip a beat and replied “I am right now!”
Neither brother will state their allegiance publicly claiming they want all of their customers to feel well taken care of – without question. Other family members don’t buy in to that thought process. Instead, Chris’ sons proudly proclaim their Buckeye loyalty, while a nephew who works in the store is a die-hard Michigan fan. A niece breaks free from all the hype and places her bets on Notre Dame, so you’ll find a few items in our store for those fans as well.
Whichever team you root for, the unique set-up and style of The Buckeye Wolverine Shop carries on serving fans for both teams of the biggest rivalry in American sports.
